Morio Matsui
Born on 1942
in Toyohashi, Japan.
In 1963 he went to the Musashino Fine Art College in Tokyo and graduated from there in 1967.
He arrived in Paris the 2 April 1967 on a French government grant.
He continued his studies at the Julian Academy (Guance Studio, 1967-1968) and at the Paris Fine
Art College (Singier Studio, 1967-1972).
He has been living and working in Corsica, France, since 1998.
Records of his work can be found at the Georges Pompidou Museum Documentation Centre.
His lithographs are part of the collection of the Bibliotheque Nationale (French National Library) in
Paris and were shown in a group exhibition in 1979 with works of Pignon, Zao Wou Ki, Andy Warhol,
Picasso.
In 1972 and 1975 he designed the interiors of the first-class sections of two Boeing 747s for Air France
and the French Ministry of Transport and shown then in the Georges Pompidou Center with works
of Vasarely, Poliakoff, Mathieu, Hartung, Colin. In 1984 he made the front page of the New Year edition
of the Geneva Magazine.
Between 1992 and 1996 the Japanese Ministry of Education chose his works to illustrate school
textbook covers.
In 1999 & 2000 he was invited in two Art Masters group exhibition in Menton showing artworks
from Giacometti, Andy Warhol, Cesar, Arman, Ben & Villegle, Monory, Velickovic, Combas, Di Rosa …
He designed the Poster for the Monte-Carlo Open Tennis Championship 2000,
To celebrate the year 2000, he showed a triptych entitled The Crucifixion, the Resurrection and the
Ascension for the Cathedral Notre Dame de I'Assomption of Ajaccio, Corsica and in the the Ascension
at the Cathedral of Monaco in 2001.He was awarded in 2003 with the higher distinction in Arts in
France,as ‘Chevalier of the Arts and Literature’ by Catherine Tasca, the French Minister of Culture
and Communication.
Some of his artworks stand since 2003 in the UNESCO Art collection in Paris
Morio Matsui has been awarded as ‘Chevalier de la Legion d’Honneur’ by the President of France in 2003.
During World Expo 2005 in Japan, Morio Matsui was the official artist of the French-German Pavilion.
He has been in 1978, 1982, 2007 in prestigious Art Gallery Berneim-Jeune in Paris and in most famous
galleries and Art Museums in France and Japan.
In January 2008 was shown as a major solo exhibition in Chanel in Ginza, Tokyo.
